If Bennett Crafton Duke were alive today he would be nearly 200 years old and would have hundreds or probably more than a thousand grandchildren stretching eight generations deep.
This is the project I have started. Trying to figure out who everyone is, where everyone is and where everyone ended up. Most have remained in Texas, but a few have escaped to other parts of the country. Florida, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Kansas, Indiana, Colorado, Michigan, Alaska, Arizona, Southern California and Northern California.
Within Texas, Austin seems to be the hotspot for our family. There are several different family groups living in Austin and also within the Houston and Galveston areas. Others are scattered across central and northern Texas. Vernon, Canton and Abilene still hold strong traces of family.
Through my Internet searches I have found some very interesting people and stumbled across some interesting stories.
Victor Fugate was a Grandson of Tom Duke (Vernon). Victor was working for the navy as a Chief Aviation Electronics Technician. He died in 1960 when a plane he was on went down in Rio de Janeiro.
Another interesting accident involved James McKnight, the husband of BC Duke's great-great-granddaughter Wilma McKnight (Eckman). He worked as a railroad engineer and was a victim of a tank car explosion at a train yard in Houston, TX in 1974. Although over 280 people were injured and 500 railroad cars were destroyed, Mr. McKnight was the only person to die in the accident.
I am still collecting family stories and will share them in future postings.
At this time I have identified 1,339 who are descended from BC Duke, or the immediate family of someone who married into the family.
